Christmas 2015

This post is sooooo late, but I just wanted to share my Christmas decorations this past season.  With 2015 flying by and work kinda of being a hot mess, I had a really late start to decorating for Christmas.  It was literally a week left before I even got the tree up!

First, I found these adorable cardboard reindeer heads at Target, so I put one together and it was our prize buck!  My boyfriend grew up hunting and this kinda went with my rustic theme.  I used a garland that his mom made for us with wooden beads and paper straws (so adorable) and it went perfectly with our burlap ribbon.  With left over ribbon, I tied little bows to disguise our 3M Command Hook stocking holders.  I REALLY wish I could have splurged for a burlap tree skirt, but I think the glittery one just adds enough modern twist.

Of course, the best addition to the decorations was our pup, Chloe.  She’s an old lady and she does really well with Christmas decorations and not knocking them over.  She definitely made this Christmas special.

What I Wore: Capsule Wardrobe

This past fall, I started reading about Capsule Wardrobes everywhere.  It was also seen on the Today show, which is where I first heard of it.  The concept is that you have 30-40 basic pieces, and that is all you wear for three months, or for an entire season.  Honestly, I quite love this idea, because there really are only a few pieces in my closet that I absolutely love and could wear over and over.  This concept allows you to re-wear the same clothing in different combinations.

After a bit of research, I settled for someone else’s method, where she used 37 pieces.  Although she had a few more shoes and a few more bottoms that I used, I swapped those counts in for my tops.  Gotta have more variety in my tops!

I had 2 pairs of jeans, 2 skirts, and five pairs of dress pants for work:

For my tops, I had 2 basic tees, 2 blouses, 2 dressy tops, 2 cardigans, and 7 sweaters.  Sure, 7 sweaters sounds excessive but it’s fall.  It’s getting cold (or so I thought, said 70-degree Christmas Day)img_1455

My three dresses I chose were a sweater dress, a thicker business casual dress, and a business dress to wear under a blazer:

For outerwear, I had my thick barn coat (not pictured), my herringbone vest, and a light sweatshirt-material motorcycle jacket.  I was really afraid that it would get too cold towards the end of the season for me to wear the vest and the jacket, but mother nature did favor my choices:

Picking out shoes for Fall was a lot of fun.  Of course, riding boots and Bean boots were going to be the g0-to picks on the weekends.  for work days, I chose neutral and pseudo-netural flats and heels.  Yes, Leopard is a neutral.

img_1461To avoid any confusion (or temptation), I separated a tiny sliver of my closet to only house my capsule wardrobe.  All the tops were on top and the dresses and bottoms were on the bottom.  The chosen shoes were located right next to the pants.

Of course my collection did not include accessories or camisoles that may be needed under thinner clothing.  I also did not include clothing for special events like Thanksgiving, my high school reunion, or Christmas.  Obviously pajamas and workout clothing (a huge loophole) did not count.

I just picked out my selection for the winter (January through March) and I can’t wait to share my picks and my favorite outfits when I’m done!

Apple Enchiladas

What happens when you have half a dozen apples that are about to go bad, and a pack of tortillas that are also about to get on the green and fuzzy side? Make apple enchiladas of course! Pinterest to the rescue again indeed!

A lot of the recipes on Pinterest called for canned apple pie filling.  It kinda defeats the purpose of using my apples that were about to go bad, so I turned to this recipe from Cooking with Libby.

The house smell amazing with the aroma of baked apples and cinnamon.  This is probably one of my favorite fall smells.

Wrapping them up got really messy because the tortilla, I learned, were actually very fragile.

Getting it soaked in a butter sauce with cinnamon was also another surprise I did not see coming, but I guess that makes sense.  What is dessert without butter?

So that butter syrup got all soaked into the tortilla and the apple filling got buttered up and reduced even more it was sooooo good.

Of course, I topped it with vanilla ice cream, caramel sauce, and whipped cream.  Definitely way better than a few rotten apples.

Make Up Monday: 1/4

Happy New Year! Unfortunately it’s the beginning of the work week and after having 2 three-day weeks in a row, facing a full work week with no vacation in sight is absolutely daunting.

Part of my New Year’s Resolutions is to wear more make up.  I feel like I tell myself this every year.  I just have so much make up that I really need to wear it all just to at least get rid of it.  However, I just keep buying more.

One of the purchases I made in 2014 was this ELF blush palette.  I saw it in the ELF Studio Store in Manhattan and I just had to have it.

Of course I kept it around for a year or so and didn’t touch it.  I later took it to Florida with me as part of my business trip make up and I just fell in love with it.  I got the light palette, because hello pale and pasty.

I think the color is perfect for my skin tone, even the hot pink color.  When I feel like experimenting, it doesn’t even look too crazy.  For some people that aspect is not enticing.  For business-bitch me, that is exactly what I need: a wide range of color that isn’t too crazy.  A wide range that is usable and something I can use up and toss when I’m done.  I think the dark palette would be the one I have the most trouble with because the colors are quite bold, but light is just right for my skin tone.

2016

Oh my goodness 2015 flew by in a MINUTE! It flew by so fast that I basically forgot to blog for about the last quarter of the year.  Yea, too much was going on and I just couldn’t keep up with my life or my career, and this blog, unfortunately, has to take the back burner.

As much as I hate the term resolutions, I make myself promises.  Promises have more permanence in my life.  Resolutions are just so ordinary and  can be easily tossed.  As someone who values loyalty, I think promises are more solidifying. So, without further ado, I made myself the same promises as the previous years

NYR 2016

I have been so unmotivated, even with my FitBit.  The constant nagging from my sister doesn’t work either.  Just for me, I am going to attempt my 10K erryday.  With all the makeup that I own, the only way to get rid of it is to wear as much as possible as often as possible.  Lastly, I am excited to introduce a new blog schedule for this blog.  This prevents my writers blocks and allows me to plan ahead for when I know I am going to be busy. More on that later.

With my promises to myself out in the open for everyone to see and keep me on, I did have some great moments in 2015:

I went all crazy for the Lilly Pulitzer for Target frenzy!

My friends are having babies.  On purpose.

I made great blogger friends who drag me to blogger events.

I got turned into a doggy mama and I love every second of it

I had another amazing trip to NYC, this time full of good food

I got a new job that is closer to the field of pharmacy that I want to work in, and my quality of life is 100% better! Also my co-workers are the best people basically ever.

The SnoCream Company took over my life (and my wallet).  It was surely one of the best finds of 2015.

Lastly, I got to see Taylor Swift in concert and it was basically the best thing in the world.  Cue midnight dance party.

Sunday Smiles 11/22

Oh hey guys.  Remember that time I was super gung-ho about blogging again? Well, my hard drive crashed and I lost everything (insert comment about how much I hate Carrie Bradshaw and the episode where she lost everything) and then I had to have emergency surgery the day after.  It’s been a rough couple of weeks, and an expensive one at that.

Friday was my birthday (as my best friend so eloquently put it, I’m twenty-great!) and it was just filled with so much love celebration that it really did bring a smile to my face.  Some birthday cake was an amazing break from my all-soup diet and I’m starting up with solid foods again.

During my rest period, I did find some real gems across the inter webs:

  1. Yesterday was Frank Beamer’s last home game at Virginia Tech.  He’s been the head coach since before I was born.  It’s the end of an amazing era and all of his former student athletes had something to say about it.
  2. U.S. Marshals seized a wedding dress boutique because the owner had some shady dealings.  All brides who ordered a dress will be getting theirs.  All remaining inventory are being sold at a deep discount. Upon googling a link to post, this apparently happens a lot.
  3. Buzzfeed compiled a list of what you get for $1000 rent around the country.  As someone who pays well over that much for a one-bedroom 20 miles outside of DC, this was a rather interesting list.  Although some of the posts are misleading (what it costs to rent ONE bedroom in a house), it makes me want to move to Birmingham, AL really bad.
  4. Kate Middleton and Prince William went rock climbing.  Is there anything she does where she doesn’t look fab?
  5. Studies have shown that girls with nagging mothers tend to be more successful.  This is 100% true for me, but I could never give my mom that credit.  She would hold it over me forever.

Sunday Smiles 11/8

Happy Sunday!  I really wanted to get this series off and kicking again.  Hopefully I stick to it!  I read a lot of random news articles and listicles at work, but can never remember to post them come Sunday morning.

  1.  I drive on the absolute worst interstate every day to and from work. Thankfully, it is in the opposite direction of the normal traffic and butt early in the morning so I avoid this craziness.  But there are days where it’s infuriating.
  2. Last week, Frank Beamer announced he will be retiring at the end of this season.  I am irrationally emotional about this.  To send Beamer off in style, students and alumni are banning together for #GAMEDAY4FRANK for his last home game.
  3. Sick of seeing that secret sister gift exchange? Apparently it is illegal.  Does anyone else remember the panty exchange and how ridiculous that was?
  4. Apparently now you can order the Home Alone pizza via UberEats.  I guess aside from a personal pan cheese pizza, all you get is a commemorative box?  I don’t know.  I like my Pizza Hut Personal Pan.  Side note: what is UberEats?!
  5. The Buzzfeed Tasty page somehow always made it on my newsfeed.  In an effort to not miss any sped-up delectable recipes, I liked the page.  It does not disappoint.

Fingers crossed that I can keep this going!  In any case, have a great week!

Monogram of the Month: November

I love November.  Not because I am a super basic girl (they prefer October), but because it is birthday month!  My birthday is just two short weeks away, and I, literally, just forgot how old I was turning.  WHEW!  Maybe that is a good thing.  Medically, no, but emotionally, yes.

Enough of that nonsense.  In September, I had gotten sucked into the Memento Mystery Box craze!  They had both a Game Day box, as well as a “Tanks are my cup of tea” box.  Neither disappointed.

All of my little treats were in my favorite colors, so it felt super personalized.  I went to the #GIRLBOSS option because, that’s exactly what I am.  This was such a sweet little surprise I had gotten myself, which means I kicked off birthday month about two months early.  Not ashamed.  Not ashamed at all.

The tanks box had, of course, a tank top that basically describes my working mentality.  The Ashley Brooke Designs mug was absolute perfection.  And if anyone knows me, I could always use a make up bag.  I either use it to actually store makeup, my own mini first aid kit, or just as a pencil bag.

The Memento Mystery Box goes up on the 15th of every month.  Sometimes the themes are announced a few days ahead of time.  I definitely set my alarm on the 15th to get both boxes, and you should too!

Daily Dose 11/6

Well, here I am again.  I haven’t posted in almost a month mainly because my work-life balance just got completely off course.   A couple years ago, when I was on rotations, I made November “me month” just because it was also birthday month and it made me reflect on my life, what I had accomplished in the last year, and what I wish to accomplish in the following year.  I definitely need that again.

Working from home today, I am getting a good jump-start on blogging again, finding good content, and incorporating more professional advice and #bosslady type things.  I also have been working on several projects that I wanted to share with you.  I initiated a lot of projects since the summer began, and I am finally seeing some success from it, so that was part of the reason I took a brief pause in blogging–I had nothing to write that was complete or concise.

That being said, we are going to go back to regularly-scheduled blogging and checking out some of my highlights from the last week:

The legendary 8-foot Costco Teddy Bear that has set the internet ablaze.

First week of November is the best because of all the marked-down Halloween things.  My boyfriend finally got in the spirit because of the thousands of boxes of Count Chocula that was left over.

Like I said, it’s birthday month, so my office has the cutest ways of celebrating all the November birthday babies!

November also means breaking out my Alice + Olivia mug and that I get to match the mug

This is what my family did for Halloween.  It was a huge hit with the trick-or-treaters, as well as the parents

Color of the Month: October

OK total disclaimer guys—This month’s color is going to need a total fail whale.  The actually color itself is awesome and a great party trick.  HOWEVER…taking pictures of it is just not working out.

Kathy, how on earth does taking pictures of Nail Polish not work out? Well….WHEN IT’S GLOW IN THE DARK NAIL POLISH.   Your eyes do not deceive you.  I got super carried away at Target and got some Sinful Colors glow in the dark polish.  It actually turned out really awesome, however iPhone cameras do not like to pick up on glow in the dark things.  You know what else doesn’t work? turning your flash on because then you see nothing but bare finger nails.
You can see two glowing nails in the upper right quadrant of this picture.  And three nails in the upper left quadrant of this picture.  Oh well, I tried.  This is actually a great little thing to have for halloween.  During the day, it just looks like a clear topcoat, so it remains super professional.  When it’s halloween night and I somehow manage to find myself in a dark room (again), I can at least find my hand because of my glow in the dark nail polish.

Pictures aside, this actually is a really cool nail polish and I definitely recommend it.  Use two-three layers!
